The sun and plastic surgery

Le 5 avril 2022

The sun and post-operative scars do not go together : in fact, the heat and the sun’s rays hinder the healing process. It is therefore strongly recommended not to expose yourself to the sun in the year following any surgery or even two or three years.

Why should I avoid the sun after plastic surgery ?

It can cause a definitive epidermal reaction resulting in scars that become darker and more pronounced instead of fading (permanent hyperpigmentation).

It is therefore important to cover them well and to apply a high protection factor sun cream during the first two years. It is recommended to opt for an index 50 (or 50+) on all scars and to protect them as much as possible (with a garment or even an opaque bandage).

It is also essential to protect recent scars in the city : one can be exposed to UV rays without realizing it, the time of an urban walk or a meal taken in terrace. The application of a day cream containing UV filters helps protect facial scars.

All parts of the body must be protected from the sun

Facelift and blepharoplasty are facial surgical procedures.

As this area is mainly exposed to the sun’s rays, sunglasses must be worn during the first few months to protect the scars from UV rays.

After this precaution, a high protection sunscreen should be applied conscientiously.

Even after a liposuction where there is very little scarring, it is strongly advised to protect the areas that have been aspirated (where there was bruising), otherwise pigmented spots may appear.

The support garments must be worn day and night during the first month to allow the resorption of the oedemas and the maintenance of the operated area.

In summary, after any cosmetic surgery, it is recommended to avoid sunlight and heat as much as possible.

In addition, avoiding any source of intense heat will reduce the risk of inflammation, especially during the days following the operation. Stay cool!
