What are the recommendations following dental surgery ?

Le 30 décembre 2021

After a dental surgery, it is important to follow some recommendations so as to maintain a healthy dentition :

Oedema (swelling)

It is a phenomenon that can occur after surgery. Swelling is a process that peaks on the 2nd day after surgery. To reduce it, you can apply an ice pack externally to the operated area. Ice should be applied as often as possible : 10 mn every ½ hour for the first 3 hours. Ideally, the application time should be ½ hour per hour during the day for the first 2 days.

The swelling decreases between the 3rd and 7th day.

Pain

Pain is normal after a dental surgery. It is usually strongest in the first few hours. Even before the numbness from the anaesthesia disappears, take a painkiller prescribed by your dental surgeon.

Oral hygiene

In order to allow proper healing, avoid aggressive rinsing of the mouth for 24 hours. This may remove the healing cap and cause bleeding. After 24 hours, rinse gently with the prescribed mouthwash 3 times a day for one week. Mouthwashes are recommended to keep the surgical site clean. On the first day, brushing should avoid the surgical area and be limited to the rest of the mouth (do not use the dental jet and electric toothbrush).

Diet

A diet is recommended for 48 hours. You will have to avoid hard foods, irritating (spices and acids), grainy (rice, raspberries) or sticky (caramels, chewing gums).

Foods such as yoghurt, soups, eggs, fish and cereals softened in milk are a good diet after surgery. You can return to a normal diet as soon as you feel your mouth is improving. Alcoholic beverages are not recommended for 24 hours.

Smoking

It is recommended to reduce or even stop smoking during the 5 days following the operation, in order not to delay the healing process.

Do not forget to follow all the recommendations of your dental surgeon for optimal results.
