Support bra and breast surgery : All the essential tips

Le 11 août 2021

It is known that after your breast surgery, you will have to follow certain recommendations and even though your surgeon will be following you for several months, questions arise before and after the operation. Here are some tips and recommendations for the period following breast surgery and the support bras that you will be wearing.

When can I return to work after my breast surgery ?

The first few days after the operation are in most cases painful and it is difficult even to lift the arms to cook or wash the hair.

Rest is prescribed by the doctor and it will take 7 to 10 days to return to work, even for a standard office job.

Do not plan to take the car and drive before 1 week or 10 days: it would not only be dangerous but also not recommended from a medical point of view.

Are there several models of postoperative bras?

Because of the medical constraints associated with this type of underwear, the styles of support bras for breast surgery whether it concerns breast augmentation with implants or breast lift…are of course more limited: there is no question of opting for a push-up for example that would interfere with the natural placement of the breasts. It must necessarily be very enveloping, well maintained and devoid of underwires or reinforcements that could potentially hurt.

What clothes can I wear with this type of support bra?

The good news is that you can keep your current clothing style during the postoperative period, there are no restrictions as long as the garment you wear does not crush your chest.

Can I do sports after a breast plastic surgery?

All physical exercises are forbidden during the postoperative period in order to avoid moving the prostheses and to promote healing. Consequently, do not expect to resume sports activities several weeks after surgery and, even after this time, it is preferable to keep a very good sports bra during exercise, or, better, your bra for breast surgery.

In addition, it is generally not recommended to practice any sport that puts too much strain on the pectoral muscles during the 3 months following the operation, especially if you have a breast augmentation with implants that are placed behind the muscle.

However, you can opt for some activities such as walking or cycling (at a very moderate pace), but avoid running, horseback riding, golf, tennis, dance, soccer, combat sports, etc.

How long after the operation can I sleep on my side or on my stomach?

At the beginning, you will have to sleep on your back, a position that is not comfortable for everyone unfortunately, during the first weeks, the breasts are a bit painful when you put pressure on them, and it is better to avoid compressing them too much. The back is therefore the ideal position to promote healing and keep the natural shape of the breasts. After 3 to 4 weeks, the breasts will become more supple and less sensitive and you will be able to resume your usual sleeping position.
