Breast augmentation and sport, what about it ?

Le 30 novembre 2021

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic operations for women. Nowadays, it is a fairly simple intervention and the postoperative period is usually simple and quick.

However, the body needs a few months to fully recover and certain precautions must be taken, so, making too much effort can have negative consequences for her body.

It is also important to mention that the return to routine and sports training is gradual.

Which breast implants shape should I choose if I am athletic ?

For patients who frequently play sports, it would be better to opt for implants that are not too large and to avoid the subglandular ones so that the implants do not move and lose their round shape when training the pectoral region.

In these cases, the subglandular prosthesis is better which also has a faster recovery process.

During the first postoperative month

For the first 15 days after your breast augmentation, rest is essential. In two or three days, you can start to return to a normal life, but it is necessary to avoid making strong movements with the arms as they can cause bleeding of the pectoral muscle or rotation of the implant. During this period, you should stop practising sports, even if you can walk, but it is always important to take into consideration your physical condition.

From the next two weeks, you can make a little more effort, but without exaggerating. You can lift light weights and make wider movements with your arms.

From the second postoperative month

After two months of surgery, you can return to your normal rhythm of life, although you still need to pay attention to sports activities. From this point on, you can run, cycle, start doing exercises for your muscles but without working your arms. The sports practices listed above can still be followed as the mastoplasty add-on was a simple operation, but in the case of a revision, secondary operation or in the case of mastopexy, it is better to avoid them.

From the third month

Three months after the intervention, the restrictions on sport will depend on the type of the breast implants. In the case of round prostheses, after three months, there are no restrictions and you can resume your usual sports.

On the other hand, in the case of anatomical prostheses, you must consider that you can move or turn by contracting the pectoral muscle, so you must refrain from practising sports that can cause these movements or that the implants can receive blows (swimming, basketball, etc.). In the latter case, you will have to wait four or five months after the operation before you can start again.

Resuming sporting life

The return to sporting life after a breast augmentation must be done with care. You must follow the surgeon’s instructions.

You should also inform your trainer of the operation you have had so that he or she can set up a training programme that is appropriate for you. When you return to sport and can lift weights, it is always advisable to do so with a load of 50-65% lower than you were used to before the operation. The objective is to prevent any discomfort. When starting gradually, the muscle will adapt to its new shape and, in a few weeks, will be able to resume work with the usual load or even increase it.

The importance of the bra

The use of a sports bra is essential after a breast augmentation surgery and even more when playing sports.

This garment should always be used during exercise even when the recovery time from the operation is over.
