Sagging breasts

Sagging breasts : symptoms and causes

Successive pregnancies, aging, weight variations or genetic factors are the main causes of sagging breasts at the level of the submammary fold. This abnormality is known as the breast ptosis.

Breast ptosis : the symptoms

Above all, it would be important to know that breast ptosis does not cause any pain, its problem is only aesthetic. The woman notices or feels a sensation of a sagging breast, a loss of volume, badly positioned nipples, an asymmetry, ...

There are different degrees of breast ptosis:

  • Mild: the breast is just beginning to fall and the nipple is located in the submammary fold.
  • Moderate: the nipple is slightly turned downwards and is located under the submammary fold.
  • Severe: this time the areola is lower than the breast fold and the nipples are turned downwards.
  • It is very important to know in which category to classify breast ptosis especially at the time of treatment to anticipate the scars that will be made and their size (inverted T, around the areola…).

Breast ptosis can be caused by many factors. It can be due to hormonal or weight variations or simply be a sagging of the skin caused by time and aging. Whatever the cause, breast ptosis is a source of great embarrassment for young girls and women who suffer from it.

    Sagging breasts :the causes

    Congenital Ptosis

Breast ptosis can occur since adolescence : its origin is genetic or congenital. It can be due to hormonal imbalance which can be treated with drug treatment.

It may also be associated with other conditions such as asymmetrical or tuberous breasts (the submammary folds are abnormally high, associated with a narrow base of the breast, giving the breasts a typical tubular shape with a wide downward-pointing areola). Many complexes can result from these anomalies.

Breast hypertrophy

In most cases, ptosis is related to breast hypertrophy. The abnormal development of the mammary gland cannot be ensured by the skin pounch thus causing a systematic distension and sagging of the skin of the breasts which is more or less significant. Breast ptosis is thus a direct consequence of this hypertrophy.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Breast sagging is often the result of one or more pregnancies, whether they are followed by breastfeeding or not, this is due to the fact that the volume of the breast can no longer be contained by the skin, which causes the breasts to sag and the breast envelope to distend.

Weight loss

A significant weight loss can cause breast ptosis and since the breast skin cannot retract properly with the reduced breast volume, a woman who has been on a weight loss diet may find herself with sagging breasts.

Weight gain

Weight gain concerns all the areas of the body including the breast where fat can account for up to 80% of the breast volume. Excess breast volume often leads to skin distension. So, the skin is no longer able to fulfil its role as a breast envelope. The skin bag collapses and this leads to a sagging of the breast.

Aging

As we age, the skin tissue loses elasticity and firmness because of the lack of collagen production. In addition, the infiltration of the subcutaneous fat into the breasts has a negative impact on their shape and their symmetry.

Sagging breasts : the solutions

breast-ptosis

No cosmetic product or drug treatment can effectively correct breast ptosis. Only a breast lift can treat it, whether it is combined with a breast augmentation or a breast reduction surgery.

Before any plastic intervention, you must have a consultation with your surgeon to examine you and indicate you the procedure that best suits you according to your case (the degree of sagging, type of skin, the size of breasts, your health as well as your medical history…), he will also prescrive you a mammography and blood analysis to do.

So, breast lift with implants or without implants (depending on your case) is a plastic intervention that allows you to have firm breasts and in harmony with the rest of your figure which makes you feel more comfortable and self confident.
