Recommendations before and after plastic surgery

Le 23 novembre 2022

Once you have decided to undergo plastic surgery, you must absolutely take into consideration a few recommendations to follow both before and after your procedure.

Pre-operative recommendations

-First of all, you must be informed about the surgeon who will operate on you as well as the clinic.

-Decrease the consumption of excessive sugar, chocolate and alcohol which are transformed into glucose in the blood and promote post-operative infections. This diet should be continued one week after the operation. Nevertheless, 3 fruits per day are possible to ingest.

The contraindication which is usually expressed concerning the use of tobacco is both relevant (because tobacco is a real poison for your tissues, in particular it fractures the elastic fibers of the dermis), but perhaps a little exaggerated with regard to surgical operations involving little detachment under the skin, the subcutaneous detachment enormously potentiates the harmful effects of tobacco by decreasing the surface vascularization, thus exposing the risk of necrosis.

-You must not eat or drink on the day of your plastic surgery.

Other recommendations may be given by your surgeon, you must follow them.

Post-operative recommendations

-Avoid standing up suddenly especially if you have undergone liposuction or a tummy tuck as getting up suddenly can trigger a malaise, you should then lie down again and lift your feet.

-In the vast majority of cases, getting up and walking after the operation is extremely important to avoid phlebitis or even a fatal embolism.

-Pain medication is usually prescribed by your surgeon after the intervention.

-Avoid touching the dressings unless specifically instructed by your surgeon.

-Avoid showering or bathing at the level of the operation wounds in order to avoid that the tap water runs inside the wound which risks dangerous contamination, a wound is generally watertight between 5 and 7 days after the operation.

-Local massages will be of some interest, but you should ask your surgeon before starting them as not all operations are subject to the same post-operative rules in this area.

-The resumption of sports should be indicated by your surgeon depending on your case and on the operation.

-Any abnormalities in the healing process or postoperative concerns should be reported to your surgeon.

-Some operations cause hematomas or deformations with oedemas, there is no magic treatment to make them disappear quickly they will fade with time.

In conclusion, a surgical operation is always a major life-changing event. Preparing the operation, anticipating potential complications and keeping a close relationship with the surgeon is fundamental for the success of the surgical procedure.

You must always follow the recommendations of your surgeon.
