Plastic surgery : not only for women

Le 11 août 2022

Once shy about the idea of plastic surgery, more and more men are now opting for it to reshape a part of their body.

The Top 5 cosmetic operations for men

In fifteen years, the proportion of requests for surgery has gone from 1 man for every 15 women to 1 man for every 4 women. We are therefore witnessing a real boom in cosmetic procedures for men, with the following in the top rankings : baldness treatment, cervico-facial lift, blepharoplasty, body contouring surgery and tummy tuck.

There has also been a major breakthrough in aesthetic medicine thanks to fillers and botulinum toxin. Hyaluronic acid allows discreet correction of wrinkles and loss of volume. It can mask the appearance of dark circles or the hollowing of the middle part of the face which are quite common in male aging.

A different demand from women

Men are generally more resistant to aggressive treatments with long recovery times. The result must be natural with minimal after-effects allowing a quick return to social life. They need to be reassured of the legitimacy of their choice because society remains critical of this approach.

Their motivations are diverse, often less emotional than those of women. But the social and professional pressure is nevertheless very present. One must remain energetic and has a positive attitude.

Men and women are culturally, psychologically and physically different and these differences must be taken into consideration. Hormones and adolescence radically change a man’s body which becomes more muscular while his face is more angular, his sexuality will also strongly influence him, inciting him to put forward his determination while the woman will be more creative and concerned about her image.

From androgenetic alopecia to tummy tuck

-The treatment of alopecia is typically male and men can opt for hair transplant.

-Eyelid surgery is performed when the bags become too large. It is often performed with a trans-conjunctival incision, thus avoiding a skin scar and preserving the orbicularis muscle. The incision is made a little lower than in women, as a male eyelid should remain slightly full.

-The facelift can be delayed by hyaluronic acid injections to regain volume. However, it is increasingly practiced for the oval of the face and the neck, making it possible to redraw the contour of the face marked by the appearance of jowls making the face less « voluntary ».

-The remodeling of the silhouette is finally a very important demand among men. In men, cellulite does not affect the same areas as in women, with fat cells concentrated on the upper body, neck, shoulders, abdomen, arms and hips. Thicker skin limits water retention and the « orange peel » appearance, but andropause decreases the capacity to eliminate fat. Procedures such as cryolipolysis and liposuction can be used to treat the abdomen, love handles and the double chin. An abdominoplasty can be performed in addition to liposuction to tighten the muscles of the abdomen.

-Finally, another typically male procedure, gynecomastia which is an enlargement of the chest, it will be treated by plastic surgery.

Men, like women, wish to improve their appearance and are ready to cross the threshold of a plastic surgery

clinic. However, they need to be counseled in order to direct them to the right treatments, and to do so, it is essential to understand their fundamental differences which will ensure success.
