Breast reduction is a cosmetic surgery which purpose is to reduce the size of the breasts in the case of breast hypertrophy. It is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery. It allows in the same operation time to :

-Reduce the volume of the breasts

-Lift the breasts

-Reduce the size of the areolas

-Reshape the breasts.

Breastfeeding after a breast reduction, yes but…

Today, in most cases, the new techniques of breast reduction surgery make it possible to preserve the vitality of the breast, the vascularization of the mammary gland and the sensitivity of the nipple and thus the possibility of breastfeeding later on.

However, after breast reduction surgery, breastfeeding is only possible under certain conditions.

The conditions !

If the breast reduction has been performed without displacing the nipple or with a slight displacement, the milk ducts can be preserved. It should be noted that these are essential for breastfeeding.

On the other hand, if during the operation, the nipple has been detached from the breast tissue to be repositioned afterwards, the milk ducts will have been cut and the flow of milk will not be able to take place properly.

It will then be necessary to wait for the subcutaneous and areola-nipple innervations to be reconstructed, but this is not systematic.

Breast reduction and breastfeeding : in conclusion

In general, removing too much breast can affect lactation. Thus, it is better to preserve a maximum amount of tissue during the breast reduction operation to have a better chance of achieving full lactation.

Also, it is better to consider your future plans or to have completed your pregnancy and breastfeeding desires before considering a breast reduction surgery. If necessary, consider the possibility of mixed breastfeeding or bottle feeding.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding : when is the best time to perform a breast reduction ?

After the end of breastfeeding, it is advisable to wait at least 6 months before performing a breast reduction. This is the time needed for the patient to regain a certain weight stability and for the breast tissue to stabilize.

Similarly, it is preferable to wait at least 6 months or even a year after a breast reduction surgery before considering a pregnancy so that the operated tissues have had time to heal completely.

In conclusion, the success of breastfeeding after a breast reduction surgery ranges from 0% to 70% and is not always predictable. It depends on the breast reduction surgery.

Do not hesitate to discuss this issue with your plastic surgeon during the medical consultation.
