Breast implants and pregnancy

Le 18 juin 2021

The use of silicone gel implants for decades has shown that having breast implants does not prevent a subsequent pregnancy from going well. The breast often changes after a pregnancy especially if there is a strong variation in weight. However, it is advisable for a woman wishing to have children in the near future (pregnancy envisaged in the coming months), to wait until the end of her pregnancy in order to avoid any aesthetic alteration of the result.

A pregnancy project should ideally be considered at least 6 months after a breast implant placement, an implant placement project at least 6 months after childbirth.

Indeed, a change in the shape of the breast and its volume and a consequent weight gain or loss may in rare cases require the change of the breast implants to adjust the volume or even the shape.

The plastic surgeon will generally ask you to give priority to this new pregnancy and to consider a breast augmentation at a later date.

Breast implants and pregnancy plans

For a woman who does not have immediate plans for a pregnancy (if the pregnancy is desired in more than 6 months), breast implants can be considered if the waiting period represents a significant psychological discomfort for the patient, particularly in cases of major hypotrophy.

In any case, if there is a pregnancy project and a desire to breastfeed, it is important to inform the plastic surgeon as this may affect the aesthetic and technical choices.

Breast implants and breastfeeding

Having breast implants does not prevent breastfeeding as the implants are located behind the mammary gland or even behind the muscle. Regardless of the type of scar, the different implantation routes allow the implants to be placed without interfering with either the mammary gland or the milk ducts (ducts leading milk to the nipples).
